Galen eCalcs - Calculator: Ideal Body Weight (Hamwi)
Description
The Hamwi formula for ideal body weight is based on height, frame size, and sex. Hamwi's method indicates that the ideal weight for a medium frame 5-foot tall male is 106 lbs and a 5-foot tall female is 100 lbs. For each additional inch higher than 5 feet, males add 6 lbs and females add 5 lbs. Males and females with small frames subtract 10 percent from the calculations and those with large frames add 10 percent.
To calculate a patient's frame size, they must place the thumb and the index finger around the wrist. If the finger overlaps the thumb, the "Small Frame" entry should be used. If the index finger and the thumb touch, the patient has a "Medium Frame". If they do not touch, the patient has a "Large Frame".
